1. The Crew and Their Mission


The Polaris Dawn mission will feature a diverse crew of four private citizens:


Jared Isaacman (Mission Commander): A billionaire entrepreneur and experienced pilot, Isaacman previously led the Inspiration4 mission, which was the first all civilian spaceflight.

Scott "Kidd" Poteet (Pilot): A former U.S. Air Force pilot, Poteet brings years of aviation experience to the team.

Sarah Gillis (Mission Specialist): A lead space operations engineer at SpaceX, Gillis has been instrumental in training the crew and preparing for this mission.

Anna Menon (Mission Specialist/Medical Officer): Another key member of the SpaceX team, Menon will oversee the crew's health during the mission.


The mission is designed not only to explore space but also to conduct scientific experiments and tests that could pave the way for future human exploration of Mars and beyond.


2. The Mission Objectives


Polaris Dawn aims to achieve several ambitious objectives:


High Altitude Flight: The mission will reach an altitude of approximately 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) above Earth, the highest any human has traveled since the Apollo program. This altitude will take the crew through the inner Van Allen radiation belts, allowing researchers to gather valuable data on radiation exposure.

Extravehicular Activity (EVA): The crew will perform a spacewalk that involves opening the Crew Dragon's hatch and exposing themselves to the vacuum of space. This will be the first time non government astronauts have attempted such a feat. The EVA will be conducted using specially designed spacesuits developed by SpaceX.


Scientific Research: The mission will also focus on human health in space, collecting data that could inform future missions to Mars. The crew will conduct around 40 scientific experiments, including tests on laser communications utilizing SpaceX's Starlink network.


3. Training and Preparation


The Polaris Dawn crew has undergone extensive training to prepare for the mission. They have completed approximately 2,000 hours in simulators, practicing various scenarios, from routine operations to emergency situations. The training included extreme activities such as skydiving and scuba diving, ensuring that the crew is physically and mentally prepared for the challenges of spaceflight.


The crew's preparation also involved rigorous testing of the equipment they will use. SpaceX engineers have developed new EVA suits, which will be tested against potential hazards like micrometeorites and extreme temperatures. The suits are designed to provide life support through hoses connected to the spacecraft, as there is no airlock on the Crew Dragon capsule.

While the Polaris Dawn mission is groundbreaking, it also comes with significant risks. The crew will be exposed to the harsh conditions of space, including high levels of radiation and the potential for equipment failure. SpaceX has implemented numerous safety measures to mitigate these risks, including extensive ground testing of the spacecraft's systems and careful monitoring of the crew's health.


Isaacman has acknowledged the inherent dangers of the mission, stating, “Anytime you try something for the first time, there are significant risks.” The team remains optimistic, however, citing their extensive training and the rigorous testing of their equipment as key factors in ensuring a successful mission.

The Polaris Dawn mission is just the first of three planned missions under the Polaris Program, which aims to validate technologies needed for future deep space exploration. Isaacman envisions a future where humans can live and work on Mars, and he sees this mission as a crucial step toward that goal.
